Fanon then asserts that black men’s desire for white women can be almost vengeful in nature-a way of asserting their own power in the face of racist oppression.įanon also explores other ways in which black people are taught to aspire to whiteness. He argues that black men feel a sense of competition with other men, and that this makes them want to “win” the most prized object within the colonial sexual economy: white women. Fanon suggests that black men’s desire for white women is a little different. As a result of internalized racism, black women wish to distance themselves from blackness, and this produces their desire for white men. According to Fanon, black women’s rejection of black men is thus a form of self-hatred, even if they themselves do not recognize it as such. They have been conditioned to believe that black men are dirty, unintelligent, irresponsible, and inferior-and that white men represent the opposite of these characteristics. Fanon proposes that black women choose to date and marry white men because they have been taught to feel disgust and disapproval of blackness. However, in his examination of this phenomenon, Fanon highlights differences between the ways in which black women desire white men and the ways in which black men desire white women. Following the conventions of psychoanalysis, Fanon maintains that desire must be the primary subject of any inquiry into human behavior.įanon argues that black people are taught to desire whiteness, and it is for this reason that many black people (both women and men) also desire white romantic and sexual partners. Drawing on their biographic subjectivities, both intellectuals theorize cultural and colonial forms of oppression and seek to produce new knowledge that is based on practice and experience.Early in the book, Fanon argues that two questions are central to understanding the world: “What does man want?” and “What does the black man want?” The separation of these two inquiries emphasizes Fanon’s argument that black people are excluded from the category of humanity, and also conveys that there are important distinctions between the desires of white people and desires of black people. Living through distinct historical moments and colonial ideologies, Fanon and Hall produced theories of historical change, which rest on epistemic ruptures and conjunctural changes in meaning formations. The article first traces Fanon’s and Hall’s transboundary encounters with metropolitan Europe and then shows how these biographic experiences translate into their theories of practice and history. It demonstrates how the experience of the racialized and diasporic subject, respectively, creates a kind of subjectivity that makes visible the work of colonial cultural narratives on the formation of the self. Lastly, I discuss Fanon’s historically attuned ‘new humanism’, once again engaging Fanon and Foucault as dialogue partners.Įxamining the work of Frantz Fanon and Stuart Hall, this article argues that their biographic practices and experiences as colonial subjects allowed them to break with imperial representations and to provide new, anticolonial imaginaries. Although the internalization of the white narrative creates a situation in which external constraints are no longer needed, Fanon highlights both the historical contingency of ‘blackness’ and the ways in which the oppressed can re-narrate their subjectivities. In this essay I bring Fanon’s insights into conversation with Foucault’s discussion of panoptic surveillance. Through a re-telling of his own experiences of racism, Fanon is able to show how a black person in a racialized context eventually internalizes the ‘white gaze’. Experientially aware of the reality of socially constructed (racialized) subjectivities, Fanon uses his schemata to explain the creation, maintenance, and eventual rigidification of white-scripted ‘blackness’. In chapter five of Black Skins, White Masks, he develops his historico-racial and epidermal racial schemata as correctives to Merleau-Ponty’s overly inclusive corporeal schema. Frantz Fanon offers a lucid account of his entrance into the white world where the weightiness of the ‘white gaze’ nearly crushed him.

The main goal of an analytical essay is to analyze the main topic and convince the reader about your viewpoint. However, there is a sharp contrast between them. High school students often confuse this type of essay with argumentative essays. According to an analytical essay definition, ‘it is a piece of writing in which the writer analyzes, interprets and critiques a work of art, situation, issue, or a particular event.’ Such essays aim to break down a topic into several subparts and dissect and analyze them in detail and find out the main points.Īnalytical essay writing significantly differs from other types of essays. Musk bought his first computer at age 11. Musk’s obsession with video games traces back to his childhood, according to Isaacson. Moritz, who then was running Sequoia Capital, didn’t bite. In another instance, Musk took venture capitalist Michael Moritz on an “absolutely bone-jarring ride” in a Lotus prototype in an effort to persuade him to invest in Tesla. “I told them that I was armed but not dangerous,” Musk said. When Grimes was doing voice recordings for a character in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, Musk arrived at the studio with a 200-year-old gun and insisted that the video game makers give him a cameo, as the cybernetic implants in the game were similar to what he was working on at Neuralink, his brain chip startup. ‘Play life like a game’Īnother one of Musk’s Polytopia Life Lessons is to “play life like a game.” In that case, Musk is the main character and the rest of us are just NPCs, or non-playable characters. “Elon was going completely apeshit,” Mark Juncosa, one of Musk’s closest colleagues at SpaceX, told Isaacson. “At least twenty percent are going to be wrong, and we’re going to alter them later, but if I don’t make decisions, we die,” he said. Musk said that on a good day, he made a hundred command decisions while on the floor. Isaacson described Musk prowling the factory floor, reprogramming the factory’s manufacturing on the fly and even eliminating robots for certain tasks to speed up production. One instance of Musk embodying his alter ego was in 2018 at the Tesla factory in Fremont, Calif. “Demon mode is when he goes dark and retreats inside the storm in his brain,” Grimes said. “But if two crazy companies work that everyone thought couldn’t possibly work, then you say to yourself, ‘I think Elon understands something about risk that everybody else doesn't.’”īut despite his claim that playing the “game” with “less emotion” increases one’s odds of success, Musk is notorious for his bouts of anger, also known as “demon mode.” “Silicon Valley wisdom would be that these were both incredibly crazy bets,” Thiel said. Just look at Musk’s businesses, which include multi-billion-dollar companies Tesla and SpaceX. Whereas most entrepreneurs are risk averse, Musk is addicted to the thrill of it, entrepreneur and venture capitalist Peter Thiel told Isaacson. When you get used to losing, you will play each game with less emotion.” Musk has gleaned life lessons from the game, which he called “ Polytopia Life Lessons.” Among them: “do not fear losing” and “play life like a game.” ‘Do not fear losing’ Musk spends hours playing the game-once he was even late for a business meeting because he was so consumed in it, Isaacson wrote. Within the brightly-colored, cartoonish-looking game, players compete to develop technologies, control resources, and wage battles in order to build an empire. Musk’s favorite video game is a multi-player strategy game called The Battle of Polytopia. From making seemingly brash business decisions, like the Twitter deal, to how he designs self-driving cars and rocket ships with little regard for safety, Musk constantly takes on huge risks with little concern for the consequences. And it’s no wonder: The billionaire lives his life as though he’s constantly playing a video game. Understanding Musk’s obsessions with video games is a key to understanding his “intensity, focus, competitiveness, die-hard attitudes, and love of strategy,” according to Walter Isaacson’s biography, Elon Musk, which was released on Tuesday. Right after they wrapped up, he pulled the trigger on his hostile bid to buy the social media company, tweeting at 7:23 a.m., “I made an offer,” with a link to a SEC filing disclosing the proposal. playing Elden Ring, a new war and empire-building video game that was released a couple months prior. To assess the agreement, concordance, and interchangebility of ACT measurements for cardiac surgery two commonly used devices for ACT monitoring were compared assessing deviations between measurements on the same device as well as between different devices, i.e., an i-STAT device was compared to the Hemochron. Although both methods are approved for clinical use, their reproducibility, agreement, and interchangeability have not been well investigated so far. While the former methods are affected by thrombin generation, platelet aggregation, and fibrin polymerization, the latter assay only depends on thrombin generation, potentially resulting in measurements more precisely reflecting Heparins anti-thrombin properties. Another method, as used in the i-STAT (Abbot Point-of-Care, Princeton, NJ, USA), is based on the electrochemical detection of a product derived from thrombin dependent cleavage of a substrate other than fibrinogen (Phenylalanin-Pipecolyl-Arginin-NH 3-C 6H 4-NH-C 6H 4-OCH 3). Most devices, like the Hemochron Signature Elite (Accriva, San Diego, CA, USA) used in our study, assess the ACT by mechanical or photo-optical detection of thrombin induced clot formation. Following its initial description by Hattersley in 1966, the Activated Coagulation Time (ACT) has been developed to be usable as a point of care (POC) test. However, long turnaround times and the high heparin concentrations required to prevent blood clotting in the bypass circuit hamper the intraoperative usefulness of these latter assays in cardiac surgery. Ever since, activated partial thromboplastin time and anti-factor-Xa assays are considered the gold standard for monitoring Heparin induced anticoagulation. Up to the 1970s whole blood clotting time was used to monitor Heparin’s anticoagulant effects. Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) is the standard anticoagulant for cardiac surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuits since 1953. Furthermore, our data question the reliability of the Hemochron in assessing adequacy of heparin anticoagulation monitoring for CPB. ConclusionĬurrently used ACT point-of-care devices cannot be used interchangeably. Furthermore, while discrepancies in ACT between two parallel iSTAT assays showed little or no clinical relevance, deviations from parallel Hemochron assays and iSTAT versus Hemochron measurements revealed marked and sometimes clinically critical deviations. Overall, disconcordant results according to clinically predefined target values were more frequent with the Hemochron than i-STAT. Although demonstrating a fair linear correlation (r = 0.815), parallel measurements on different ACT-devices showed large bias (−20s 95% LOA: − 290-250 s) and little concordance (kappa = 0.368). Hemochron derived ACTs demonstrated worse linear correlation (r = 0.782), larger bias with considerably broader LOA (− 13.14 s 95%LOA:-316.3–290 s), and lesser concordance between parallel assays (kappa = 0.554). Bias, as determined by Bland-Altman analysis, was low (− 3.8 s 95% limits of agreement (LOA): − 77.8 -70.2 s), and Cohen’s Kappa demonstrated good agreement (kappa = 0.809). Parallel i-STAT ACTs demonstrated a good linear correlation (r = 0.985). Measurements were compared between identical and different device types using linear regression, Bland-Altman analyses, and calculation of Cohen’s kappa coefficient. Blood samples from 30 patients undergoing cardiac surgery on CPB were assayed at specified steps (baseline, after heparin administration, after protamine administration) with four parallel measurements (two of each device type) using commercial Kaolin activated assays provided by the respective manufactures. We evaluated the agreement of ACT assays using four parallel measurements performed on two commonly used devices each (i.e., two Hemochron Signature Elite (Hemochron) and two Abbott i-STAT (i-STAT) devices, respectively). However, concerns exist regarding reproducibility of ACT assays and comparability of devices. Since inadequate heparin anticoagulation and insufficient reversal can result in complications during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery, heparin anticoagulation monitoring by point-of-care (POC) activated clotting time (ACT) measurements is essential for CPB initiation, maintainance, and anticoagulant reversal. Since tart cherry juice is high in antioxidants, it’s considered an anti-inflammatory and may have a positive effect in preventing chronic illnesses, including a variety of cancers. While further research needs to be done to understand the impact that tart cherry juice can have on our immune system, the cherry itself contains flavonoids and anthocyanins, in addition to Vitamin C, which can help us fight infections and avoid minor illnesses like the common cold. These findings are especially significant because “Cognitive function is a key determinant of independence and quality of life among older adults,” says Sheau Ching Chai, an assistant professor of behavioural health at the University of Delaware. Helps your memory and brain functionīecause tart cherry juice is loaded with antioxidants, it can improve our memory, ability to focus, mental stamina, decision making, and other cognitive functions, especially in older adults (65 years or older), according to one study. What’s more, it can also have a positive impact on the pain management and physical functioning and mobility of OA patients, and those who experience painful flare-ups from gout. Could help alleviate arthritisīecause of its anti-inflammatory properties, research shows tart cherry juice can provide necessary pain and stiffness relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Of course, when we experience quality sleep, we’re less likely to be cranky and more likely to be mentally alert. One study has shown that it can give us an extra 84 minutes of sleep. The great news is tart cherry juice is loaded with it, which will not only allow us to fall asleep faster but stay asleep longer. Melatonin is critical in regulating our sleep cycles. Whether you’ve just run a half-marathon or finished a high-intensity weightlifting session, tart cherry juice can help prevent muscle soreness, allowing you to recover even faster.Įven better, if consumed as part of your pre-workout routine, this juice has been shown to have positive effects on your total body energy, endurance, and mental focus, so you can enter and stay in the zone. The healthier option is to purchase a juice with no added sugars, for example, one that shows 100% Montmorency, all-natural tart cherry juice on the label.įull of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, iron, and Vitamin A, Vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and zinc, tart cherry juice is an anti-inflammatory and a natural source of melatonin that will help you get a better night’s sleep or help your muscles recover faster after a workout. Do note, however, that some tart cherry juice products on the market are sold as “juice cocktails” and these tend to be high in added sugar. When served cold, it makes for a satisfying and restorative drink, especially after a workout. Benefits of tart cherry juice Nutrient-rich and deliciousīesides its rich, red hue, tart cherry juice is as naturally sweet as it is tart. Here are some of the key benefits of tart cherry juice and why incorporating it into your health regimen may be the cherry on the cake to a healthier lifestyle. Sold over the counter, and often near the coconut water and aloe vera juice, tart cherry juice is making waves in health, wellness, and fitness circles alike. They are tangier in taste than the Bing cherries we often find in our local food shops. Otherwise known as Montmorency cherries, tart cherries originated in France, but they’re also grown throughout Europe and in the United States and Canada. But did you know cherries–especially tart cherry juice–are full of antioxidants and come with several health benefits? From gummy candy to pies and tarts, it’s one of the most popular flavours in the confectionary world. From childhood, many of us have loved anything cherry flavoured. Pair it with other natives like Bee Balm, Gay Feather, Switch Grass, Little Bluestem, Goldenrod or Black-Eyed Susan for a natural wildlife flowerbed. The terminal clusters of small white blooms are produced in abundance and gradually open from middle to late summer or early fall.Īny garden could benefit from a well-placed Mountain Mint to attract pollinators. Pycnanthemum virginianum grows 2’-3’ tall and has narrow, toothless leaves on multi-branched plants. It prefers full sun to part shade and moist to wet soil, but it is tolerant of drier soils and drought. In the wild, plants are typically found in the moist soil of meadows, swamps, stream sides, and pond edges. Pycnanthemum virginianum, also called Virginia or American Mountain Mint, is found from North Dakota south to Oklahoma and Mississippi, and northeastward into Maine and Canada. Like the other Mountain Mints, it spreads via rhizomes to form attractive colonies. Its white flowers with two purple spots are produced in terminal clusters and open over an extended period, from middle summer into early fall, slightly earlier than P. Pycnanthemum tenuifolium has very fine, almost needle-like leaves on hairless, erect, branched stems that are 2’-3’ tall. It prefers full sun to part shade and, unlike most Mountain Mint, dry to medium moist soils. It is endemic to dry, open woods, dry prairies, and fields as well as along roadsides, streams and in wet thickets. Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, also known as Narrowleaf (or Slender) Mountain Mint, has the widest natural range, found from Texas to Nebraska, northeastward into Canada and southeast to Florida. It is a relatively quick spreader with shallow rhizomes that may travel across the soil surface as well as below. The individual blooms open gradually over a period of six to eight weeks in late summer to early fall.Ī 2013 study at Penn State Extension Service showed that Pycnanthemum muticum is the most popular pollinator species, being visited by at least 78 insects in a few minutes time. Its bloom clusters consist of tiny white to lavender flowers that have a silvery cast. Pycnanthemum muticum prefers a sunny, wet to moist, well-drained site, but will tolerate part shade, clay soil, heat and drought.Ĭlustered Mountain Mint is a 2’-3’ tall, upright plant with silvery green, oval leaves that have sharp tips. It is naturally found in bogs, savannas, and other low areas, as well as mountain ridges and balds. Pycnanthemum muticum, also known as Clustered Mountain Mint, has a larger native range from Texas to Michigan, east to Maine and south to Georgia. Its rhizomatous spread is slower than some of the other Mountain Mints. The plants are upright, 2-3’ tall, and produce dense cymes of fuzzy white to pale lavender blooms in late summer to early fall. The leaves may take on a reddish or purple cast in cool weather. Pycnanthemum flexuosum has oval, toothed opposite leaves on square stems that are covered with fine white hairs. It is prettiest planted in full sun and moist to wet soil, but it will tolerate drier soil and drought. It is naturally found in wet sites, such as swamps, bogs, bottomland forests and pine barrens. Pycnanthemum flexuosum, also known as Appalachian Mountain Mint, has the smallest native range, from Virginia to Mississippi. The smell is not for everyone: deer and rabbits almost always turn up their nose and pass it by for other potential meals. The leaves of Pycnanthemum species have a wonderful, minty fragrance and are often used in teas. It can be grown in more manicured gardens if it is placed in an area that limits its spread, or planted in a large, buried container that will block the rhizomes. Mountain Mint is perfect for wildlife gardens, meadows, roadsides, and other naturalized areas where it can stretch out freely. Not because it’s picky – actually, it can grow in most soil types – but because it is a rhizomatous spreader. In the garden, Mountain Mint needs just the right spot. A Mountain Mint in bloom is in constant motion thanks to attention from native bees, honeybees, butterflies, solitary wasps, and beetles. While Mountain Mint’s flowers are not very large, they are numerous and rich in nectar, and they open over a long period to extend the potential feeding time for pollinators. It can be found naturally in a range of habitats from mountain ridges to forests, from dry prairies to swampy bogs, and every biome in-between. Commonly called “ Mountain Mint ”, this family of plants is native to much of Eastern and Central North America. If Eastern US native pollinators have a favorite plant, it is without contest Pycnanthemum. Open all equipments at the same time, check the voltage condition. If the lamp is going off, check that the amperage value of the battery matches your vehicle. Solution: Turn off your headlights, mists and other electrical equipment during such a flashing situation, when you are driving, by pulling your vehicle to the side during idling. For example, if the headlights are flashing and the air conditioner is working at the same time, the charge lamp is blinking. This situation often happens in the evening or when the electrical equipment is working more than once. The battery lamp does not fully light but turns on with a dim light, and a dimmer battery lamp indicates insufficient charge. The problem can be corrected by removing the charging dynamo and repairing the necessary parts.ģ-If battery light is dim or off-and-on: In some cases, a so-called charge lamp flare may occur. If there is less voltage from this range and this voltage is rising when you press the glaze, there is a possibility of charging dynamo failure. The measurement made at the idle should be within the range of 13.7 – 15. You can do this with a tool attached to the battery pole heads. Solution: The voltage of the alternator (charger) should be measured while the car is idling. Usually the first reason that the car charger is not at a sufficient level. If the battery light is on while the vehicle is running but when you step on it, the lights of battery can go off. Solution: If there is a problem with the battery, you should check every part of electric current or you should chceck whether are there any leakage of electricity in your car or not.Ģ – When you step on it, the battery lights off: It is usually the first of the most common situations. One of the most common problems in vehicles is the problem of the battery discharge lamp blinking. Battery Charge Lights Are Blinking (SOLVED) The water pump (circulation pump) will also not work in the event of a V-belt breaking, in which case the engine will not cool down and overheats, causing severe damage to the motor. The alternator belt may break if it is over tensioned.ĪTTENTION: If the V-belt is broken, the engine must be stopped immediately and switched off if the charging lamp is on. The belt tension can be controlled manually by pressing it from the middle of the longest part of the belt in the gap, when the finger is pressed. Alternator belt (also called V-belt) is torn or belt tension has decreased or deformed. In this case, the fault can only be eliminated by changing the regulator. The regulator of the alternator can be get damaged. In this case, the problem is solved by simply disassembling the plug and replacing it with the new one, there is no need to replace the whole alternator. Alternator charcoals (brushes) may be exhausted or broken. The Reasons for Why Battery Charge Lights are Showing up This history supports a meaningful allocation to Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS), even for taxable investors who may otherwise have a bias for the tax-exempt income of municipal bonds. The drawdown history shows that inflation is an outsized risk to the purchasing power of bonds in particular. This event does not even register in the nominal returns of Exhibit 1, but it is more severe than the -25% real bond drawdown for the current Post-COVID Inflation, which may not be over. The real bond drawdown that began with World War II Inflation and was extended and exacerbated by the 1970s Great Inflation ultimately reached a maximum drawdown of -44%. However, strikingly, real bond drawdowns can also be severe and they can persist for decades. Given the current inflationary environment, we also review real stock and bond drawdowns.Įxhibit 3 shows that equity drawdowns are just as severe and prevalent when adjusted for inflation. However, real drawdowns capture the effect of inflation on the purchasing power of stocks and bonds. Investors perceive nominal drawdowns in real time. Stock returns during these discrete bond drawdowns were usually positive and uncorrelated with bonds, providing diversification. The average bond drawdown across the bond drawdown events is -8%, with the largest (-15%) occurring during the current Post-COVID Inflation, which as noted may not be over. Importantly, bond returns during these equity drawdowns were almost always positive and uncorrelated (or negatively correlated) with stocks, providing diversification when it mattered most. The current Post-COVID Inflation drawdown is the least severe equity drawdown of the group, but it may not be over as of the writing of this article. The average equity drawdown across the equity drawdown events is -45%, with the largest (-83%) and longest drawdown occurring during the Great Depression. Each drawdown event begins from its unique prior peak value for either stocks or bonds. In Exhibit 2 we identify seven major equity drawdown events (top panel) and six major bond drawdown events (bottom panel) in reverse chronological order. stock market’s life (about 94% of the time) has been spent in a drawdown from the prior peak, suggesting that drawdowns are a normal part of the return-seeking process.ġ We use monthly total returns of the Ibbotson US Large Cap Stock and US Intermediate-Term Government Bond indexes to March 1994, then daily total returns on the S&P 500 and Bloomberg US Treasury indexes thereafter to capture more granular drawdowns when this higher-frequency data became available in Bloomberg. The graph shows that equity drawdowns have been far more severe and prevalent than bond drawdowns. 1Įxhibit 1 is a drawdown or “underwater” graph, where each new stock or bond peak value is reset to 0% to focus the eye on drawdowns. We survey a history of market drawdowns, first reviewing nominal stock and intermediate-term government bond drawdowns, then real (inflation-adjusted) stock and bond drawdowns from 1926 to June 2022. It manifests through time as stock-market and bond-market drawdowns, which are more intuitive (and painful) representations of risk. Standard deviation is a good summary risk measure for statisticians, but it is not intuitive to many investors. In addition to lower risk, bond returns were uncorrelated to stock returns (0.05), providing a diversification benefit. The higher return of stocks came with higher risk – a standard deviation of 18.6% versus just 4.4% for bonds. These returns compare to an inflation rate of 2.9% over that history. government bonds from January 1926 to June 2022. equities and 4.9% for intermediate-term U.S. |
